Restoration: Construction phases 1 to 3 completed

After the restored cap was put back on the mill on 22.04.2020 as the completion of the first construction phase, in summer 2022 Construction phase 2 (wings and gallery) were also completed. At the end of June 2022, the gallery was completed and the restored wings installed, allowing the mill to rotate using wind power for the first time in about forty years.

The construction cost for the entire project was €230,000.00. This was covered by funding from the German Foundation for Monument Protection, the European Union (ZILE), the city of Sulingen, the Bingo Environmental Foundation and from the association's own funds.

Construction phase 3

, the restoration of the mill technology was carried out in parallel by the company itself. The storage, conveying and mixing equipment have already been overhauled and repaired and the transmission has been overhauled so that the mill can now produce with both motor and wind power

.

The windmill in Labbus

The listed gallery windmill in the Sulingen district of Labbus, built in 1851, is a living, technical cultural monument in this beautiful, rural area. With its completely preserved mill technology, the mill was still in commercial operation as a compound feed factory until 1987.

In the mill, the development of artisanal milling from 1851 to the 1960s can be experienced first hand.

In 2007, the non-profit “Association for the Promotion and Preservation of the Windmill in Labbus eV” (“Mill Association Labbus”) was founded. The purpose of the association is, according to its statutes:

"...the preservation, restoration, maintenance and promotion of the listed windmill in Labbus near Sulingen. The windmill should be made accessible to the public as a cultural asset."

Since summer 2022, thanks to the efforts of the association, the Labbus windmill is the only one in the Diepholz district that is fully functional again and is regularly put into operation and demonstrated by qualified millers.

Our goal is to produce flour and groats on a non-commercial basis in the foreseeable future.
